Our Story
JP Bedfords is a proudly independent, second-generation family business with a rich heritage dating back to 1973.
The company was founded by Charles Bedford following his qualification with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in 1958. Driven by a passion for architecture, construction, and surveying, and a commitment to professional excellence, Charles established Bedfords with a clear goal: to deliver trusted, high-quality surveying and construction expertise to clients across Kent and beyond.
In the 1980s, Charles’s sons, Mike and Charles Bedford, joined the firm, helping to guide its growth and broaden its capabilities. Upon Charles Bedford’s retirement, Mike took the reins as Managing Director.
Over the decades, Bedfords expanded far beyond its roots in Maidstone. Today, with offices across England, the company offers nationwide coverage, delivering a comprehensive range of construction consultancy services across all sectors of the built environment.
In 2017, a new chapter began when lifelong friends and professional colleagues, Paul Parkinson and James Tavare, were appointed as company directors. Having studied together at Nottingham Trent University, where they both earned their degrees in Building Surveying, Paul and James also went on together to achieve chartered status with the RICS in 2008 and have since amassed over 34 years of post-qualification experience between them.
With their leadership, the company became ‘JP Bedfords’ a name that celebrates both continuity and fresh energy. The “JP” reflects James and Paul’s combined leadership while the retention of the ‘Bedford’ name honours the strong foundations laid by the Bedford family. The name ‘JP Bedfords’ is meant to signal a renewed vision and dynamism, while staying true to the trusted reputation and high standards established over more than 50 years.
Now at the helm of JP Bedfords as owners, Paul and James are committed to building on the company’s strong foundations. They bring energy, innovation, and a shared passion for construction, architecture, and the built environment. Their vision is to drive the business forward, while upholding the high standards and trusted reputation that JP Bedfords has become renowned for.
