Following a devastating fire at a Grade II listed farmhouse, JP Bedfords were appointed to manage the sensitive restoration of the property.

The fire completely destroyed the thatched roof and caused water damage to the lower floors, creating significant structural and safety challenges.

JP Bedfords successfully navigated complex heritage and planning regulations to replace the original thatch with stone slate, a fire-resistant material that preserved the building’s historic character. A request of our client as they had major reservations about returning to their home, if it had to retain its original thatched roof. The restoration involved minimal intervention to the main roof and carefully considered modifications to the east lean-to. Working closely with Historic England and Local Authorities Conservation Officer, JP Bedfords delivered a technically robust, historically sensitive solution that mitigated future fire risks and maintained the property’s aesthetic and heritage value.
