Reinstatement of fire damage to an historic structure. The Nayland Rock Promenade Shelter is a Grade II listed building located in a prominent position on the sea front. The shelter is not only a fine Victorian building but is also of historical value as it is where the poet T.S.Eliot wrote The Waste Land in 1922

The shelter is available to the public to enjoy the sea views across the English Channel. A fire was caused as a result of a portable barbeque not being extinguished correctly. The fire was controlled before it had a chance to spread to the whole building but caused significant damage to the central timber framework, seating and floor construction.

Being a listed building and also of particular interest to the local community the works were undertaken in close consultation with the Listed Building Officer, local authority planning and building control.

Each component to be replaced was bespoke made using original materials and the original timbers as templates. The seating design was integral to the whole structure and the ornate curved seat arms and benching were replicated perfectly.

Access to the supporting framework beneath the raised steps was limited. Repairs to existing framework were made beneath the steps rather than complete replacement in order to allow the history of the shelter to be charted in years to come.
